Greening the ShakesPeare festival

Shakespeare Festival St. Louis Goes Green!

Shakespeare Festival St. Louis and St. Louis Earth Day are proud to continue their partnership to bring environmental responsibility to the nightly Shakespeare performances in Forest Park.

Over the past two years, St. Louis Earth Day has hauled out 10.3 tons of recyclable material from Shakespeare Glen.  So please play a starring role when you attend the Festival and place all recyclable items in the St. Louis Earth Day recycling containers. The only non-recyclable items are styrofoam (plastic #6) and food waste. It’s that simple!

Local food vendors Cairdeas Coffee House and LaGra Italian Tapas & Wine Bar have also joined the effort and will cut down waste by using real plates and silverware for their Festival catering efforts. They are always working to provide locally grown and vegetarian food options, so be sure to consider Cairdeas and La Gra for your Festival fare!

We are also making the Shakespeare Festival as green as possible by working with Ameren UE Pure Power to offset 100% of the energy used to power the nightly performances with emission-free Missouri Wind Energy Certificates.  The energy used to power the Shakespeare Festival has been offset with Missouri wind energy credit courtesy of Pure Power by AmerenUE.  For the 23 festival performances this season, this simple act will prevent the release of 37,999 pound of carbon dioxide into our Missouri atmosphere, the same Green House Gas emission reduction as not driving a car for over 3 years.  Many thanks to our friends at Ameren for their generous donation of Pure Power offset credits!

The portable restroom units provided by locally-owned Johnny on the Spot use eco-friendly chemicals and recycled paper products. Their parent company, Veolia, is providing the recycling dumpsters, enabling recycling efforts. And when the final curtain comes down, leftover set materials will be donated to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore and as much as 80% of the remaining waste will be composted and recycled.

Recycling on the Go is the region’s first wide-scale event recycling program. The program aims to reduce the negative environmental impact of events and festivals by reducing and recycling a portion of the waste generated.

St. Louis Earth Day is a non-profit 501c3 organization whose mission is to make every day Earth Day by cultivating environmental stewardship and engaging individuals, governments, businesses, schools and the non-profit sector in celebration, education and action to support a healthy and sustainable future.
